I started a lemmy instance at https://lemmy.myserv.one but find it hard to get people to join. The instance is just a way to help reduce the load on other lemmy servers like lemmy.world so one would think it would be desirable to join as its quite fast and simply makes the experience better without detracting from anyones favorite instance they already feel loyal to. Would be interesting to hear how other people find members to join. From a user perspective I understand that looking for the most popular server and joining there makes sense since then you are doing what everyone else did, so from that point of view I understand why everything gets piled up on just a few servers.
They need a green yellow red indicator for server load next to each instance so people understand that the load needs to be spread out. And I think people need to be defaulted to view all instances
Yeah I think when deciding which server to join we need an indecator of server load, server location (for latency purposes), and if a server is blocked in or blocking other instances. Something like https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances
Same thing happened during the first wave. Everyone piled into lemmy.ml because that was the official-looking instance until it started crashing every hour and staying down for long periods due to the overload.
I assume the same thing will happen here. People will pile into lemmy.world until it starts crashing every hour, at which point people will actually start spreading out a bit.
Interesting.
I’ve joined!
Love your username btw. Have fun burninating the countryside!
Ok thank you, let me know if you have any issues or need something done. Appreciated.
Where is your server located? I’ve seen a lot of interest in the past day or two for instances that are closer to the user for latency reasons, that might encourage some sign ups.
In the US although I must admit there are already a lot in the US already.
Well I’m here now!
Ok thank you, let me know if you have any issues or need something done. Appreciated.
I’ve just joined!
Ah thanks man. Appreciate it.
I think it’s just confusing. I still don’t get it. Instances, communities, servers. I find it difficult to find communities also, I just search a subject and tap each one of the results to see the follower count. I feel like it needs to be simplified for normal users. I can’t even find an option to follow users.
Dont worry its being worked on. They didnt anticipate an influx of users and are now trying to add features they thought they had months to implement in the coming weeks.
That makes sense. Thanks!
