I love it. This could be a variant in the near future. Saving comment for reference!

I was talking to a friend about the recent issues Lemmy, and lemmy.world in particular is facing.
I suggested that while the scaling issues on the Lemmy software itself is being worked upon, maybe more “bland” country/region instances where people can join is a viable solution…
That I’d love to make an account on
lemmy.sea
(a Southeast Asian Lemmy instance)

Same here.
Why I created an account with the same username as on Reddit on lemm.ee: Because I can’t bear the slowness of lemmy.world.
This is the same [email protected], just on lemm.ee.
I think most people who held out until the last moment migrated to lemmy.world hence why it’s slow. Glad I’m on lemm.ee though, and that the admin is participative in contributing to the code. I trust the developers will be able to have a fix for these issues soon.
Thanks for the tip. I’ve made my account on lemm.ee in just under 20 minutes. I hope, though, that this won’t be a pattern.
Oh, this is the same @[email protected] you replied to.
Anyways, I hope this won’t be a pattern where we look for “underpopulated” instances only to find it too crowded soon enough. I remember Lemmy.world being described as idyllic before the Reddit blackouts. That’s barely a month ago, lol!
It would be interesting to have a .ph instance though. r/ph managed to reach 1M subscribers alone, and the offshoot ph subs could justify having a ph-centric instance.
I flirted with this idea after reading up that Lemmy can run on a NAS. Good thing I didn’t, seeing how the weekend traffic brought Lemmy to its knees.
A single stack might not be enough judging from lemmy.world’s upgrade woes. And in hindsight, you’ll also need a team of technically adept people aside from the admin/mod team. But it could also be interesting to have a single user instance for the sake of having a local copy of all the federated communities you subscribe to… as long as those instances would allow federation.
You need someone to host and pay that domain. .ph domains tend to be expensive to renew.
Yeah. Hosting might be cheaper, but it would be a challenge to keep it sustainable if it’s going to operate through contributions. And yeah, it’s a pity that dot.ph has complete control over the .ph TLDs. But I suppose it doesn’t necessarily have to be a .ph, but any domain name that could cater to the ph crowd.
how about gawa tayo sarili natin instance? will be financed through donations galing mismo satin. Pero is it possible ma-takedown un instance if ever na may topic na controversial for example sa itang politician? something like na-insulto xa sa post natin and pinagbantaan tayo?
That’s another can of worms I’ve never thought about. Reddit used to have a warranty canary in their annual transparency report. It disappeared on the next year which indicated that foreign governments has started potential user information requests.
In 2016, there was one preservation request from Philippines. But by last year, there were 8 content removal requests.
So yeah, it’s possible that a PH-centric instance could be sanctioned by the government for content they may deem questionable.
I didn’t even think about the possibility of government censorship, tbh. I was just thinking that creating a PH-centric instance might not be viable, but perhaps an instance to serve South-east Asia might be. I also briefly entertained the mental image of a very salty SEA-centric instance (like the infamous amount of salt present in SEA gaming servers), but that just intensifies the pun in my head.
On a more serious note, yeah. It doesn’t have to be hosted here in the Philippines, maybe perhaps Singapore? That still faces the issues of skilled admins (to handle all the technical stuff associated in hosting an instance), as well as the associated expenses (and managing donations).
Jose, can you see?
Sana ibalik ng sugod bahay ang “problem solving” , tawang tawa talaga ako sa segment na ito before
ewan ko pero madalas nawawala un comedy pag absent si Jose sa sugod

Minsa’y Isang Gamu Gamo is getting the boutique label treatment via Vinegar Syndrome!
tl,dr: It’s the movie where Nora Aunor yells the iconic “My brother is not a pig” lol
Vinegar Syndrome
Oh no…
Bakit naman?
They are known for buying unfinished Z-grade movies from 20th century and restore them with uncanny voice actors and “whatever everything left on the film reels.” You can compare it with Criterion Collection.
They have some good shit collections, though.
They are using the 2018 remaster by ABS-CBN on this one.
Yeah, I recently checked it. I guess they have the rights on this one.
work to survive… ugh how annoying
Sharing this here.
Today’s Ask PHlemmy: What is the one thing that never gets boring to eat?
Chicken, kung marami kang spices/other ingredients sa bahay.
Pickled cucumbers.
Personally, egg. There are several ways on how you can enjoy the versatility of eggs; it can be steamed, fried, boiled, baked, or poached. The possibility is endless.
Tapsilog??
French fries for me. Though recently I’ve started appreciating kamote fries.
Rice lol, as long as there is ulam, it doesn’t get old

Unli wings
Shawarma.

Someone brought up bailing from Twitter in the previous RD thread, and I quickly remembered how I would tweet just to keep myself entertained with the long queues. Wala pa ako mobile internet a long time ago so I’d have to send my tweets to a dedicated Globe number and they will post it. Parang old school telegram, lmao.
This was a pic from one of my older tweets. Yung mala-isaw na pila ng jeeps sa North Avenue terminal.
Edit: To be clear, this was a pic I took during that exact tweet. It wasn’t on the tweet itself since I obviously can’t upload images (nor did Twitter support it yet).

I did this for Plurk back in the late 2000’s, but not that often since the amount of lag is just incredible (but defensively so). It’s a really nifty service back then though, posting through SMS, even if limited to just text.
Good morning! Gusto ko magabsent aaaaahhhh
Ain’t it sad that people are compelled to go to work even when under the weather? Halatang the compensation is not sufficient and that most workplaces are not “employees first”
Morning to you too, I’m sure you can do this, no need to be absent.
Pinapasok kahit sinasakit ✊😷 masked up na praying sana wala mahawa jusko
Spread the love ika nga lmao.
Edit: To be fair if your feeling out of the weather, I say call in sick no issue with it. Then again I’m not your boss what do I know.
Good morning! Laban lang 🤸♂️
APPROVED!!!
Parang naging default instance kasi ng most of those who join Lemmy ang .world, which dapat mag spread out between instances para hindi ma-strain yung capacity ng mga bigger instances. Kaya nga may federation. It’s not that hard to subscribe to a community from another instance naman. Most of the communities I’m subscribed to are not in lemm.ee but that’s the beauty of federation, I can still interact with the other instances while never actually leaving my instance. Siguro kailangan din natin i-direct and mga incoming users to other instances para ma share ang load between multiple instances. Just my 2 cents.
I definitely agree with this, but damn, the upkeep for having an instance of your own can be a strain on your server, though. We have a small instance of ours in order to subscribe to other instances (not just lemmy.world) and in a span of 4 weeks, the database got up to 6 gigs already… can’t imagine how much it would cost to have more than 15 users. Donations would have to be a default setup if people want a particular instance to keep running and not have it become like Reddit, and I understand better now why some have to pass a particular screening first.
Huh. I just realized how ActivityPub could be a double edged sword if I’m understanding it right. If you have 5 users in your instance who are all subscribed to the same community on another instance, then you’ll only need to store a single copy of that community in your instance. But if all 5 each have a different subscription, then you’ll be storing a copy of each community for all 5 users. The first scenario would be more efficient in terms of storage.
I’m of the opinion that ideally, Lemmy.world can act as the assembly area for the new migrants. It gives them time to get a feel of the Threadiverse as a whole, without having to think about instances and federation and all that shit. Once they’ve gained more experience, or found an instance that better fits their needs, then they can go.
However, given the amount of people pouring into Lemmy.world, I think that it might be a good idea to “randomly assign” an instance to them. That is, a number of small instances that are willing to take the load off Lemmy.world can group together to form a pool of instances that are then randomly assigned to those coming over from Reddit through a portal like a more newb-friendly version of https://join-lemmy.org/.

Exponential growth is scary! I sure hope instance admins, as well as Lemmy devs (and contributors, and others such as those who actively look for problems in the code), are already working on such problems. In the meanwhile, yeah, the amount of goodwill is just overwhelming as well, which I hope translates to more donations instance admins and Lemmy devs (and contributors).
