My boss has just had a meeting with all the staff saying we’re going to have to put all our phones in a “lock box” during working hours and only access our phones during our break. I’m wondering if this is even legal in nz as I’ve never really heard of it happening. I’m happy not using my phone during working hours but don’t feel very comfortable leaving it in a box

    In many places, yes.

    If you don’t like being treated like a school kid, it’s time to move on.

    But for fun, maintain that your phone is a medical emergency contact device for a family member you never specify (They can’t ask you details like that here). See if you can make 'em squirm.
