Even if they figure out how to prevent damage from EMPs, power companies and home owners won’t bother implementing them.
In 1989, Hydro Quebec was told by its engineerings to lower the voltage to prevent damage from a geomagnetic storms from the sun. Management said no. This happened https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_1989_geomagnetic_storm
They were also told how to prevent it with a few modifications. That got vetoed too. Next solar flair or near miss CME, we are all going back to 1930.
