Yellow Corp., a 99-year-old trucking company that was once a dominant player in its field, halted operations Sunday and will lay off all 30,000 of its workers.
The trucking industry is fucked. I drove for ten years. Most companies walk all over their drivers while paying them peanuts.
I did the math a while back on the Teamsters and they only represent about 15% of the truckers in Canada. (Im Canadian I didn’t do the math for America so I dunno.) That’s not enough to keep wages high for non-union drivers, which leads to the non-union companies undercutting the unionized companies, further killing the workers’ ability to bargain.
I keep hearing stats about how North America is short a combined 400,000+ drivers but the job becomes less and less appealing as time go on. That’s why I got out.
