  • I’ll just pay a higher flat rate rather than be tracked everywhere I go, thanks.

    Also…

What causes the majority of damage to Oregon’s roads?

Weight, weather, and traction devices cause the majority of road damage.

Why not charge drivers by vehicle weight instead?

Weighing passenger vehicles is impractical. Passenger vehicles like cars, pick-up trucks and vans weigh much less (under 10,000 pounds) and produce less wear and tear on the roads than freight.

Oregon ensures that freight vehicles (26,000 pounds or more) pay their fair share for this extra burden through the weight-mile tax, where vehicles are taxed on their weight and the miles they travel in Oregon.

26,000 pounds is an insane limit. A Ford truck is at least double the vehicle weight of my car, and sometime up to four times heavier. Not only is it causing 2-4x the wear and tear on the road, I’d be taxed the same.

Weight class and mileage for the model should be used to determine an individualized per-mile tax at the time of registration, with either a flat rate option or a registration renewal odometer option available if you don’t want to be tracked.

Legislation should encourage decisions that are better for the environment, but this puts EVs and giant trucks on the same footing.
