  • It’s a system thing, Alvarez and Foden usually play on opposite sides of midfield. Pep prefers a left footer on the left of midfield and vice versa, the problem is when City move to their 442 shape in defence neither Alvarez nor Foden can play alongside Rodri so Bernardo has to play.

    If Alvarez gets dropped it means Lewis or Nunes can play on the right of midfield, Foden plays on the left of midfield and Bernardo can play RW. In the Leipzig game we saw exactly this and it was probably City’s best performance all season.
