politics @lemmy.world•Schumer, Jeffries Refuse to Join Democrats' Growing Calls to Slash ICE Spending | Common Dreams
11·2 days agoOMG you mean the power structure will run another primary candate in the next election to try and oust incumbents they don’t like? Whatever shall we do, when the outcome of that primary will be determined by who gets the most votes? I can’t think of anything! I guess we should just stay home and take whoever the elites decide they want.

1·2 days agoBut they could only do that for the office of president+VP, a national office. They don’t have conventions for choosing candidates for any of the other offices–those are decided in the primary, period.
Also because of the backlash from thatm after similar issues in previous years, there was some reform to reduce the power of the superdelegates:
Superdelegates would now be prohibited from voting on the first ballot at the National Convention if their votes could be influential in the outcome.4 (However, if their votes could not sway the nomination, superdelegates would be permitted to vote on the first ballot.) If no candidate received a majority of pledged delegates on the first ballot, superdelegates would be allowed to vote on subsequent ballots.

2·3 days agoI didn’t expect you to glean that from “Huh?”. That was only my response to your saying that Democrats “formed another party” because that never happened. I apologize about including all the other stuff there. I got confused about who you were originally replying to since your post happened to be right under my post in my view of the thread, and thought it was to me. Sorry for the confusion!

3·3 days agoOh that–yeah that was dirty politics! But that’s not what I’m talking about. That was about the internal leadership positions of the state’s Dem party apparatus. What I’m talking about is voters voting in elections that send the winners to elected office as state or federal senators and representatives, governors, mayors, school board members, etc.
So, like what we saw with Mamdani. He ran for office, meeting the legal requirements to do so. The Dem Party couldn’t stop him from running for Mayor. But they did whatever they could to make him lose the primary election, mainly by spending tons of money campaigning against him and for Cuomo. But Mamdani won it handily anyway. Even then, the Dem party didn’t even try to help him win the General. They couldn’t stop him.
This could be repeated in other places, other elected offices. Especially the House. And winning seats at the State level is just as important.

10·3 days ago… they can track every phone at a protest and see where it goes home
That’s why you only ever have the burner phone turned on with the SIM in it while you are at an event and always turn it off/remove the SIM before you leave. Wrap it in foil also makes sure a signal can’t be sent or received.
Another option is just a stand-alone video camera (I have one that’s about half the size of a phone), or using a phone with no SIM and wifi off.

5·4 days agoYou apparently don’t understand what it means to primary a candidate (from the left, in this case). I’ll explain it for you. The way to get more progressive people in Congress is to primary the existing congresspeople with a more progressive candidate.
Whoever wins the Dem primary in this district will win in the general. It does no good to wait until the general to just vote against the republican and get Jeffries again. You have to find and support a good progressive candidate who is to the left of Jeffries and beat him in the primary. If that doesn’t happen, no one is going to even bother running against Jeffries because they know they won’t beat him in the primary. People have to support support support an opponent.
This is how magats took over Congress. They primaried the hell out of the “traditional” repubs, from the right. They won some of those primaries and lost some. Then sometimes they still lost in the general if their candidate was too far to the right for their district. But they didn’t care because they still won in a lot of others. They kept doing this every election, and the more power the right got in Congress, the more trad repubs just dropped out and didn’t even try to win re-election. Once it gets going it snowballs.
There’s no reason the left can’t do the exact same thing to the Dems as the right did to the repubs. Well, unless it’s already too late now that maga controls the government, that is.

News@lemmy.world•Denmark in ‘crisis mode’ as Trump sets sights on Greenland after Venezuela attack
5·8 days agoI don’t know what the arguments against this idea would be, but seems to me like the first thing Denmark needs to do, probably with the help of some allies, is expel the US from Greenland, take over the US military base there and strongly fortify it. Then the US can’t use it for the invasion. I’m sure their plans heavily depend on having and using that base. Don’t say anything beforehand, just show up with enough force that the existing US contingent there can’t win if they fight back, present the eviction notice, and get them moving out before US can send reinforcements.

politics @lemmy.world•Stephen Miller Asserts U.S. Has Right to Take Greenland
144·8 days agoDear Rest of the world: I think you’re still in denial and need to understand some things.
There are three main factions in the US, two of which have actively taken a side: Pro-trump/Maga and Anti-trump/anti-fash (because this is way bigger than just trump). The third group is staying out of it and consists of the apathetic(“I’m too busy just trying to get by”), the dual-haters (“Democrats are just as bad so fuck everyone”), and the frightened targets who are lying low.
-
When you say things like, “you sacrificed children for your 2nd amendment, this is what it’s for,now is the time to use it” you are talking to the Magats. They love guns and the second amendment but they are the PRO-trump faction–they aren’t going to go against him, they love him. The Anti-trumpers are not the gun nuts, though some of them have been acquiring guns recently out of fear.
-
The numbers are against the Anti-fash faction: There are a lot of magats/maga supporters, more than many want to realize or admit. They do not live in the same reality as the rest of us. They watch and listen to pro-fash propaganda from Trump, the media, their religious groups, and now the institutions of government itself. They believe it and believe in it. Anti-trumpers are in the minority compared to the magats and the third group. Looking at protester demographics, a large percentage are older/retired, which doesn’t help in a general strike. These numbers will likely shift toward the anti-fash as things get worse, but it hasn’t happened fast enough.
-
The entire republican party apparatus is completely under trump/maga control, and it controls the entire federal government and the majority of state governments. The Supreme Court majority is 90% in agreement with their agenda, so the regime can do whatever the hell it wants with impunity. And is.
-
The magas have taken control of the election process in many States. We don’t know how free and fair the 2026 elections will be. We can be sure that by 2028 they’ll have even more control over the election process in more states than they do now.
-
Trump will invade Greenland, at least if Europe and NATO don’t make it clear they will go to war against the US to stop him and I’ve seen nothing but hand-wringing and “please don’t talk like that” from them so far. Trump is all in on the “Sphere of Influence” worldview with Putin and in that worldview USA gets the Western Hemisphere. Europe and Canada: Stop wishing and waiting for American citizens to be able to depose this regime and start preparing for what you’re going to do about the US.

News@lemmy.world•Key Epstein Deadline Arrives as Attention Turns to Venezuela
51·9 days agoNo. The continued atrocities and cementing themselves in power are the primary goals: rounding up and disappearing people they don’t like, Venezuela, then Greenland and Canada. Distracting from the Epstein files happens as a natural side effect without much extra effort. Their lackey supporters (entire repub party, corporate & social media, etc) are busy doing that work for them.
