For quite a while here in Brazil, the United States was somewhat respected up until the 2010’s. Of course, those more inclined to history, humanities or left-wing politics despise the country, perhaps except the liberal leftists, who normally don’t care about the external world. The non-political minded are inclined to idealize and like the US because it’s related to the media they consume – sports, music, series, etc. Besides that, the country is largely ignored by Brazilians.

Usually the US is admired by the extreme right-wing of my country, especially after Trump’s election. For instance, here is a right-wing gathering in Brazil, where these cursed flags are displayed:

To a certain extent, yes. But if you think about hardware, we are very far from having control. Even my highly niche distro, Parabola GNU/Linux-libre, which is one of the few distros accepted by the FSF for the promotion and use of free software, still is obligated by the circumstances to leave proprietary code related to some Intel processors microcode. Even FSF accepted distros have to allow things like this related to hardware, otherwise their system would be unusable.

But yes, Linux laid down a very solid framework to develop alternatives to corporate control of your software. However…

Even if you don’t see “capitalist control” of your life, it still exists irrespective of your knowledge of it. Everything you need to fulfill your existence is a commodity, and to buy these goods, you need money. If you have no properties, to earn money you either steal it, or you sell yourself (your labor, your life) to a small or large capitalist in exchange for money.

Capitalists achieved monopolies on the internet, such as Meta, Inc., Google, Reddit, Twitter, etc… They’ve all become propaganda networks of the United States bourgeoisie. These corporate monopolies share a similar business model: to earn money through advertising and capitalist propaganda. The selling of commodities tailored to your interests based on an algorithmical profile description, and the push of narratives usually following the interests of the imperialist bourgeoisie.

Irrespective of your decision not use these platforms, your family members do, your friends do, your colleagues do, even your cousin’s three year old infant has an Instagram profile nowadays. Considering all of this, I think you’ll agree with me that we can’t escape capitalist control by changing our distros, but I agree with you that it’s a healthy direction to use free software.

That’s only true if there’s an organized effort for that from users and developers, and still that would be true only for ownership of software limited to the Linux operating system. As for technology in general, it’s almost totally under the control of the capitalists and large shareholders.

It’s indeed related to my ISP. I use two different networks in my house, the second one is used by the rest of the people I live with, and Wikipedia pings effortlessly there. But this only happens from time to time.

Reddit is political as well. Besides the propaganda you see of commodities, services, courses, stores, and other stuff for marketing purposes, Reddit has explicitly banned communities which were growing with political discourse against exploitation and corporate control of society.

There’s no such thing as something “not political”. If you are indifferent to reality, you are inadvertently allowing oppression, exploitation, discrimination to continue happening. To be consciously political is to criticize the current state of things, study their causes and fight for its solution. Otherwise, what’s the point of living, if not to constantly improve our lives collectively?

I get it, you won’t buy because you think it’s expensive. I think it’s expensive as well. Actually, even if I thought the opposite, it wouldn’t make a difference because I don’t have the money to buy something like that to begin with.

What I wanted to say is, even if I can’t afford it, we will benefit from the development of this industry as well. Because the Linux system is an operating system with a vocal (but extremely disorganized) free software community.

Systemd is supposed to be simply an init system. It does way too much than its function. It’s also produced by a corporation, Red Hat, so we can be sure this creeping feature of systemd is by design. I use OpenRC, and I actually feel my laptop doesn’t hang like when I used systemd and it initializes faster as well.

Systemd also launches updates constantly, rarely because of security, and ot updates so fast that it’s hard to track the changes in the software and audit what the software is doing with our computers.

The billionaire corporation Red Hat “donates” to Desktops like GNOME (see their supporters) with one of the conditions being that they use their software. The creeping design of systemd locks desktops into their ecosystem because there are no alternatives for an init system with so many functions, because an init system shouldn’t do what systemd does in the first place. And since systemd dominates the market further and further (Sep 2020, KDE adopted systemd as well), there seems to be no solution for that. Most software are developed with systemd in mind. I’ve seen way too many applications developed with systemd in mind and depending on systemd software. This is locking the user in their ecosystem.

I understand people doubt me, but my experience with OpenRC showed me how an init system is supposed to be designed. And Red Hat is a profit machine, so I wonder if systemd isn’t doing some creepy stuff on your computer. At least my computer doesn’t hang and crash as much as when I used systemd.

This could be merely a question of time, any new “paradigm” could make its way into the average consumer if it shows to be affordable and usable. Linux was actually very used in peripheral countries for a while to prevent the abusive fees Microsoft exploit through intellectual property when an institution uses a pirated Windows copy. The government of my country used GNU/Linux for a long time, and we even had a GNU/Linux operating system of our own, Kurumin Linux.

The only reason Windows became so prevalent in peripheral countries after a while is because now manufacturers of computer machines have a clo$e relation$hip with Microsoft’s very fat offers and the sellers become obliged to sell the machines with Windows installed if they do not wish to get heavily fined for it.

Still, Linux accesibility has nothing to do with its design or its ‘mentality’, in my opinion, but it’s admittedly rarely used nowadays.

Linux development took way too much time to enter the market, and therefore will face tremendous difficulties, but it is indeed a step in the right direction. Having GNU/Linux phones can open many possibilities in software development, and most definitely, free software. You’re right about the ecosystem issue, though. I have no idea how they will pull it off, but PinePhone has been able to do wonders with their resources lately.

systemd is a bloated mess. Don’t ever use it.
