  • I agree with your order, though I haven’t seen Hollywood. If your taste continues to match mine, you would probably put Django and Hateful somewhere around 5 and 6.

There’s a fan theory that Tarantino has actually made two different series, splitting at Basterds. That’s why some of his movies are more grounded, and some are more cartoonishly violent. The theory goes that the events in Basterds created an alternate universe where violence in movies is way more socially acceptable. The more grounded movies (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, etc) are set in our universe, while the more cartoonish ones (Kill Bills, Death Proof, etc) are set in the alternate universe.

Kinda interesting theory, and I definitely prefer the grounded ones to the alternate universe films.

  • Interesting story. Dropkick Murphys (Boston-Irish punk band) got their first national hit by doing a punk version of “Shipping Out to Boston,” which was a Woody Guthrie taperoom-floor forgotten song. They also just lost one of their lead singer/songwriters last year.

They were trying to figure out what direction to go in, when Woody Guthrie’s granddaughter called them up to say she had found a bunch of other scraps and notes, wondering if they had any interest in putting together an album.

They said “fuck it, sure” and made an album called “This Machine Still Kills Fascists.” It’s not quite my cup of tea, but it resonated with a lot of people. If you’re interested in Guthrie’s music it’s definitely worth a listen. Modernized medium-talent version of his b-sides, basically.

  • God, corporate America is so fucked. Starbucks, Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, Google. That’s a quick, off-the-top-of-the-head list of LOCAL companies that have bought in on aggressive union busting in the last few years. There are infinitely more national brands that decided that execs making fast profits is more important than workers’ livelihoods.

Just look at what Rodger May did to Peter Pan Seafoods. Perfect example of cutthroat capitalist bullshit. Thousands of jobs lost, skyrocketing prices for consumers, bargain prices for the guy who caused it.
