Keep in mind, that I won’t only do my nas and maybe PC like that. Other PCs in the house should be added as well. CU cabling is easier to get through the house rather than fiber. Also I can’t shut the door anymore. With flat cables I still can do so. As mentioned on another comment: Drilling holes isn’t an option unfortunately :/

Paying 27,23 USD for my 85W NAS (which I need to bring down badly …) per month. Waiting for a new bill on solar power on your balcony early 2024. Lookin into buying 800W panels and a battery. Should help bring down the operational cost tremendeously.

• Just python on a box? Any Linux you are comfortable.
• Python and a bit of self hosted services? Look into CasaOS (which is an app for Linux).
• Full fledged NAS with Docker support? TrueNAS or Unraid (which does cost a bit).

Those cpus are more than fine for anything you’d might throw at them. That said - if you get an upgrade for cheap, why not? But nothing I’d say it might be worth hundreds of dollars for forced upgrades.

No one will mind. If it lets you sleep better at night, wipe it if possible. They just put it onto a test system, see if it is really broken and throw it into a bin container for recycling.

Worst that can happen is, that someone want’s to have your movie collection and restores it off the HDD on a side setup for personal use. No one will forward it to the movie association for legal prosecution!

It’s interesting reading this. Here we switched from WD over to Seagate for couple of years since they totally redeemed themselves. Planing to switch from 4* 8TB WD Reds to 8* 20TB Seagates next month and can’t wait to build the system
