  • You know a lot more than me! Interesting post, thanks :)

So on the muddled part (PetaPixel is pretty generalist and simplifies a lot): the actual difference is given by the processing and not strictly by the decoder? I don’t like how Apples “RAW pipeline” handles Canon RAW, so I either use the toggle in Nitro to bypass it (and start with a LOG-like image for a video comparison) or have to rely on the horrendous Canon DPP. All three cases give me different results in colors and noise (with the native Canon solution usually giving the best image, unfortunately)

  • I tried it out with:

    • tint more magenta
    • very slight cooler temperature
    • HSL tuning of reds increasing pink and decreasing luminosity

I think the color matches better OPs perceived color, but I’m not a pro and color management drives me crazy sometimes - that’s the reason why I felt picking up this old post would be fun :)

  • I’ll just necropost here for fun: to me it looks like a white balance “issue”, with the first picture being much more green tinted. Leaving color temperature the same but moving the tint slider to magenta could bring out a color that more properly matches what you perceive in reality. This can be done with any basic photo app, like the iOS Photo library.

  • Design to be cheap is not a bad thing, the problem is when something should be quality but is subpar. Fully agree on missing buttons, but then the infotainment system is best in the industry. Internal materials are just a big piece of the puzzle: for what I know, some suspension bushings wear out pretty fast but apart from that (and ignoring the joke that is the Cybertruck) I don’t hear much about other core components being bad: battery, chargers, motors. Maybe AC and compressor have had problems, because of the - again - hunt for cost effectiveness by removing unneeded parts. But all in all, I think you are greatly exaggerating.
