As a non American who has visited the US,

It’s the creepiest thing when the anthem starts playing and everyone around you turns into zombies, all facing the same direction, all frozen in place. The first time it happened I felt like I was the only human left in an Invasion of the Body Snatchers situation.

    Real brainwashed vibes.

  • I think a length of wire is more about being a vague measurement and to distinguish it from a wire coil, which is a separately useful thing in electronics.

Calling things a length isn’t indicative of being short. Terms like a length of rope and length of wire are fairly normal ways to talk about things without a strict measurement.

  • I interpreted it as a stereotype of certain privileged classes of white people that are so out of touch with the struggles of the world that they don’t realise how dangerous it is to try this. In fact, I think there has been cases of upper/middle-upper class people who have gone on these kinds of tourism-pilgrimage and have ended up dead.

  • The ideas have always been there, it’s just a bottle neck on cheap electronics and people figuring out the foundation technology. I can’t think of to many tech advancements that have surprised me; that’s not too say they aren’t impressive, but just about anything we can imagine is possible.

The main thing I don’t expect to see is useful and reliable brain/electronics interfaces. I think biology is too unique for an of the shelf product to be possible, which means it’s too hard to make a profitable product.
