Blood rain, giblets, and warm bullet casings
Mild, sharp, and sharper cheese tastings
Metal dudes shredding their taut guitar strings
These are a few of my favorite things

  • I mean, I’m not going to pretend I wont buy Wilds and give it a shot. I’m a hopeless addict after all (trying another Niantic game proves this). I just felt seemingly exactly like you where World was lacking the charm I came to expect. I still remember having an oh shit moment during that first MHW gameplay trailer with Anja. Rock effects instead of blood and this boring, milquetoast-ass straight up plain old T-Rex wannabe. Turned out to be more than that, but that was the first moment I didn’t feel like I was seeing “real MonHun.”

But RiseBreak knocked it out of the park for me. I feel comfortable calling it my favorite title now (as I make my way through the past with emulation). It was a perfect blend of old and new. And a direct evolution of MHGU mechanic cooking from the portable team.

I hold no only a small grudge against the 5th fleeters. I’m happy for the series’ success. I’m just hoping for a modern remaster of old titles now more than ever and that the portable team keeps doing portable team things.

  • I really don’t think, somehow, bizarrely, inexplicably, that niantic or capcom thought their built-in autistic monster hunter fans that do math for their damn video games were going to play this. They probably also don’t want people to know how it’s going to take 12k zenny and 6 rare 6 mats to go from 7-5 to grade 8. Probably would kill casuals spirits.

  • Yeah, I doubt it has legs as it is. It sits in a precarious position between too grindy/inaccessible for casuals and not able to be sweaty grinder by hardcore hunters. Could be wrong though, maybe if you play it really casually, but I doubt there’s money to be made there. Which, there is no current onus to spend other than potions at the moment so they also don’t have a great financial model. It’s got a lot to fix if it wants life. Not a surprise though after hearing about all the other non-POGO niantic fails.

  • This is never a good question to ask. Everyone is just going to suggest their favorite. Or for the multi-users, all their faves. RiseBreak is really the title to try out everything and see what feels good. And don’t neglect mixing up the switch skills. I ended up loving weapons I always hated because of that.

Because you’ve already dove into what is generally considered the hardest for beginners, you’ll probably be fine with anything else you pick up. So I would recommend Switch Axe. It has a lighter gauge management mechanic but is faster. No defense though, until you get the elemental burst counter.

No idea what that comment about LS could mean. RiseBreak is a DPS focused game for a majority of players. But you don’t have to focus on it if you have more fun playing a different way. LS is just very counter heavy, so knowing your weapon and the mons very well is perhaps the biggest roadblock.

  • So far, it seems to me hammer got the best move set translation. The auto-run to the mon while you charge is the best feature. All the move sets are pretty faithful and feel good, except my beloved bow. Unless I haven’t figured it out yet, it feels most awkward (but still good enough). It seems like you have to just stand still to charge shots. Then you can do some dodge dance moves from there. But getting charge with stand-still holding is the only way I see to.
