Good news for those who aren’t using Reddit anymore: this DT has almost twice as many comments as the one on Reddit. Thats good for us, since I and a few others were expecting a lot of people to zoom on back to Reddit the moment the sub reopened

One interesting thing I noted from a quick flick through, there seems to be a lot less replies to comments, but a similar amount or maybe even more upvotes than usual. Makes sense since the sub has about 600k members, and like 95% lurk (what’s that effect called again? The 90-9-1 rule I think?)

It probably won’t last though, I don’t think we’ll lose many people just put of losing interest at this point, but since Reddit is by far the larger platform and r/Melbourne the larger community, it’s just kinda basic maths that eventually more people will go to the larger community on the larger platform and start engaging there. But at least we have cemented ourselves as a solid alternative Melbourne community off Reddit!

The API changes haven’t actually hit yet. There’s a bunch of apollo/rif users about to get their access yeeted.

I don’t think this will have any impact. I think the vast majority of reddit users, myself included, had no idea there was anything other than the reddit ap or desktop. I googled how many Apollo users there are, looks like about 2million. Reddit says it has 1.6 billion active users. I dunno if those numbers have any accuracy (zero fact checking) but I think the API date will be a wimper for user numbers not the bang it’s been hyped to be.

    so dumb

See rolling over the folds of my brain,
A heavy fog that covers the pain.
    Debt repayments made to Hypnos,
    Plus interest paid in cryptic symbols;
Dreams shift and morph with heartbeats,
Each moment a lifetime lived, a feat.
Seek refuge under the starry nightsky
Some dreams are meant to slip on by

What a day! Hand stretched around 200+ pizza bases and hand peeled 60kg of potatoes. Bought avocado on the way home because guacamole is Miss Peeler’s latest food obsession. She and I made said guacamole when I got home. Took some time to admire my young Mr Peeler’s new avatar on WWE 2K22 and observe his wrestling game. Did a load of washing (just remembered I haven’t hung it up yet. D’oh!) Cooked dinner, did my exercises (day 3) cleaned the bathroom a bit and helped Mr Peeler (Luddite) with phone tech issues. Now I am laying in bed just blobbing out. But I must hang the damn washing. Bugger!

Sigh. Got the real inferior feels today. My co-worker somehow managed to interview and land a new job within two weeks whereas meanwhile I’ve been applying and interviewing for roles in the same areas over the last few months with no success and feedback ranging from ‘we hired internally’, ‘too much experience’ and ‘not enough experience’…ugh maybe I just suck at my job.

Omg so adorable, I was watching a video of a mother cat and her kiten and my mumma cat came into the room and started sniffing all around the speakers because she could hear the little kitten’s tiny mews . What a beautiful lady she is.

Decided to suss the smoking room here at JK airport (when in rome etc) and it is a solid compression session.

A staff member with tags walked in holding 2 beers opening the two heavy doors with her feet with an unlit ciggy in her mouth ready to go. Absolute pro compression session-er.

Back in melbs after much driving yesterday and today. I’ve grown to really like long country drives. After a very long resistance to listening to podcasts in the car I think I’m converted. Just starting with Radio National for now.

I also inexplicably have developed angular cheilitis (corners of mouth are cracked and sore) over the last few days and now I’ve got a pair of mouth ulcers on the top and bottom lip near them as well. Not fun.

But overall, a fantastic few days off.

      Welcome back to Melb!

Unfortunately the podcasts I listen to are either sports or comedy related stuff so probably won’t be your thing but I’m sure someone here knows of some good suggestions for you.

Thanks! It looks like a forecast of the usual cold and misery, but it’s sort of good to be back in familiar territory with slightly less murderous drivers. I will definitely be looking into more podcasts as I have some regional work trips coming up. Might even consider an audiobook

Actually I have one suggestion that a friend sent to me a few years ago that might be what you’re looking for.

It’s a podcast by ABC called Life Matters and has some interesting topics that might take your fancy.

What’s a good client for iOS for this website? I used Apollo for iOS and that’s the reason I’m cutting back on Reddit.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

There’s an app I’m using called Mlem. It’s the only iOS app out there at the moment. It’s still in beta testing with about 2 weeks to go for official launch. It’s fully inspired by Apollo.

You can download “ TestFlight “ from The App Store and then try to get the latest version here👇

@hasteee @StudChud while it’s not ideal and doesn’t look little Reddit, it’s worth noting that there are several Mastodon apps which you can use to follow communities (or users) on kbin & lemmy, and you might find that gives you a bit of a window into how different the Fediverse is - it’s kindof like being able to post to Reddit from Twitter, and receive replies in your Twitter notifications.

        Thanks for the reply mate.

I did actually sign up for Mastodon the other day, thought I’d get my preferred username sorted out before the rush for it.

I figure both Twitter and Reddit are on borrowed time but I’d be lying if I said I understood the fediverse just yet.

Will save this tab for tomorrow and get it all checked out!

@hasteee haha that’s one of many differences between Fediverse and gated silos, you don’t really need to rush for a username, you choose a server you think is well maintained and fits your ethos and hope for the best, the biggest servers aren’t necessarily the best choice. Right now the #threadiverse is groaning under the weight of new users, and because it got attention so suddenly, the servers are often struggling to cope with the increased traffic. that will settle down, but right now aussie.zone seems to be doing well (aus.social Mastodon server was in a similar position when Space Karen bought Twitter). I just love that I can have a conversation on the “equivalent” of a Reddit thread, from my most used account on the “equivalent” of Twitter, and have it all in the same timeline. It can be good to separate accounts out, sure, but I’m experimenting here and liking the results so far.

I guess I’m saying don’t think of it as just a Reddit replacement, start thinking of the Fediverse in a different way, though having an app which shows you Reddit style interface and has those features at its centre, will also be great, they just aren’t here yet =)

    Okay fam, got a q…

Does anyone know of a site that can populate Google Maps addresses into nice format to print out? Like if I was looking at cafes in a particular suburb and wanted the list and map with the pins showing.

Trying to print from GM itself is a bit of a hot mess.

I really want a heatmap/pin drop of my accounts in my CRM so I can visit a whole suburb of customers at once and not miss people. Sounds like SalesForce should have this plugin, but I haven’t done enough research.

I’m not gaming a whole lot at the moment, but I did put a few hours into D4 on Sunday/Monday, around household chores, partner time, appointments, whatevs, yet my brain decided to give me a dream where my partner broke up with me via D4. Thanks, brain.

At the height of my WoW days, I was playing enough for it to be a second full time job, after my actual job and on weekends. I’m not sure I could do that anymore, I get antsy about an hour or so playing anything.

WFH today, so might have to nab a bit of D4 time on my break…

What are you playing at the moment?

I remember the raiding days in MMOs. The amount of time I devoted to FFXI and WoW was next level, it really did feel like a 2nd job with attendance and stuff.

At least with FFXI I was just burning time leveling and wasn’t good enough to raid due to time zone differences.

What changed my mindset was when WoW released an expansion with a level cap boost and it invalidated all my raid equipment almost instantly. It made me feel as if all the raiding I done had been for nothing.

So I gave up after that.

Right, that’s such a shit feeling! New expansions have felt hard to get into because of that invalidation, however after a break, I keep feeling the urge to get back… Never done any multiplayer stuff in the FF world, interesting!
