I’ve setup Guacamole to access my home LAN and it works amazing. But, one feature of TV I’m trying to figure out is how I can install something on my parents computer (outside my LAN) that will allow me to connect without having to rely on port forwarding on remote end (what if my mom is travelling for example).

I considered setting up a VPN, but I don’t feel the client should have constant access to my entire LAN at home.

Looking for suggestions how I could setup some sort of client setup on remote computer that works without port forwarding on remote computer. It would need to “call home” I suppose to update its remote IP and be able to connect regardless of remote firewalls, suggestions appreciated!

Well, I ended up w/ using wg-easy to setup a VPN between moms computer and guacamole server. I like this because I can control the VPN on my end easily via the WebUI. So when I want to RDP, I’ll enable VPN then use Guac to RDP, but most of the time, no VPN. Also, I now have a VPN. Tried Rustdesk (so promising, so horrible), read on other options, tried MeshCentral again.

Guacamole RDP over HTML is just the bomb as far as the actual user experience once setup. This way, by having VPN, I allow Guacamole to do what its good at and I allow VPN to do what it is good at and don’t try and find software thats “all in one”
