Got a strange one here, and im sure im missing somthing simple.

Buddy of mine did a mobo, ram, cpu upgrade on his own and is running into some issues with the PCIe 5.0x16 slot not detecting his 2080 in windows device manager. Strange part is it works 100% fine in the slot below thats the 4.0x4 slot.

Specs: 14700k cpu MSI z790 pro-a wifi mobo Zotac 2080 Ddr5 6200mhz ram (currently just set to stock without xmp until i figure out the pcie issue) Win11 home 1 sata6 ssd samsung, 1 m.2 nvme ssd samsung. 1000w seasonic psu

I tried swapping the bios settings for the pcie lanes to gen 4 instead of auto.

Confirmed with him the connections to power and board are well established thrice.

Mobo is on the latest firmware from msi.

Ez debug leds dont show any VGA/display errors in either slots.

GPU has power and fans spin up whilein the 5.0x16 slot.

Im honestly stumped on this one and what to try next or look out for. Have a feeling im probably missing somthing simple here.

MSI support hasn’t been responsive so im posting here as a last attempt to gather ideas.

Edit: buddys not the brightest star. He wasn’t confirming the bios changes, he was just exiting out… swapped the pcie setting from auto to gen4 and made sure he saved them. Working good now.

Did he reuse his previous Windows install? Did he install the motherboard drivers?

Fresh windows install, mobo drivers and chipset drivers installed. I’ll double check with him on the versioning and if he just did it via windows update or directly through the manus support page.

Sorry for the rushed response, at work atm.

Is it not detecting it, or is it not working at all as a display output? Sounds like you have display capabilities (sorry, I forget if the K series has a built in GPU), so is it just the detection that’s the problem?

Yep k series has igpu, igpu works fine.

Output works fine from the 2080 if in the 4x slot, detects in windows and all is good with the driver installation.

It just straight up doesn’t detect the GPU in device manager at all, and the driver installer didnt detect it only while in the top pcei 5x slot.

Sorry for the rushed response, at work atm.

It’s a new board, so I wonder if the slot is faulty. Manufacturing faults do happen sometimes. Do you have a newer card you can slot in and test?

Yeah im thinking a similar thought. Ill see if he can locate one to test with. If not I’ll send him to a local shop so they can test it. Unfortunately lives 1000km, otherwise id beable to do some better testing for him haha!

          Thanks bud!
