Ima go with maybe an out the box take here. BB knows how to talk with people. Whether it’s young black dudes or older white guys everyone in the middle does not matter he can connect with people. Maybe it’s something he’s learned or it’s innate. However he can be a dick of a coach cause as a person he can be funny, relatable and decent.

His protégés completely fail at this. They try to be Belichick the coach whose a dick all the time and this why their players tend to hate them. They can’t connect with their guys

I basically have the same thought about Tomlin. You hear former players talk about the accountability demanded from Tomlin and I think it’s a specific personality thing where he can get guys to play their best for him.

It’s different from guys like McVeigh where the protégés are valuable because of the offensive schemes they learn from these coaches (I’m sure this is oversimplifying).

Ultimately the skill set of a good CEO style coach probably isn’t easy to cascade to the other coaches compared to the offensive minded coaches.

A part of the article that I agree with is the fact that his assistants would often see the front facing Bill and not the tiny, moving parts that were also there. This would be one of those parts that seems to be missed. I still think Flores would be a good head coach (I’d keep him in MN forever if I could), especially if he’s picked anything up from O’Connell on creating a culture that is collaborative. But a lot of his guys return to him and double down and somehow get 2nd chances.

He’s a hardass but he’s authentic and he loves the game. Also he has a good sarcastic sense of humor. Players respect that. His assistants are just assholes without all the good stuff

I think it’s the classic Peter principle at work, the kind of person who excels working under Bill is terrible as a leader themselves. I bet someone who would be a great head coach probably wouldn’t do well under Bill because of what he expects of his coordinators, etc.
