I think most of them are being honest. When many people are confronted with a new piece of information something they don’t know they just glaze over.

On the front page of any unlogged in site or maybe the front page of the sign up explain to them that there are lots and lots of sites you can use to sign up They can all see the same data you can all subscribe to the same subs. And then another message when you go to post a comment that searches for any community links and gives you a suggestion on how to change them to work from any server. That’s it If you put any more out there than that they’re just going to shut down on you say it’s too difficult too complicated.
