    My favorite part:

even if you believe reddit is 100% on the right, I don’t see how people can go like “yeah, that’s the leadership I want to invest in, that’s the social site I want to invest in, a site that’s going out of their way to piss off a large part of their userbase so that they leave, that’s the leadership I feel comfortable giving my money to”

burning millions of dollars on … spez

    Brilliant!!! lmao

I feel that mods do have the right to the blackout more than Louis believes. Mainly because they have been free labor. The site depends on free labor to maintain order and always has. Alternatively they could just stop moderating and let each subreddit fall into a useless free for all.

I think you hit the mail on the head. All social media succeeds based on their power users and community. If just a small amount of people switch, the platform sto of s exponentially growing which looks bad for advertising. Especially if all these people are the small percentage that helped moderate the entire platform.

      Fully agree.

Also, I saw several subs who asked their members if they should join the blackout, so it’s not really fair to say mod decided top down.

I think they lied when they said that the blackout had not impacted the bottom line, it just makes sense to say that. Admitting that the blackout was working would mean you have to roll back the change and potentially hurts the IPO launch.

Even if it’s true that the blackout was ineffective I think the real test for Reddit will be what happens July 1. I for one will not be using Reddit on mobile without RIF, it’s what I’ve been using since 2012. I’ll continue to use RIF as long as it’s working and I’ll also use Reddit on the desktop, but my mobile usage is about the plummet.

I think a lot of people are likely in the same boat, but even if they aren’t it won’t matter to me.

I’m thinking of doing the same. I was a power user in some niche communities, hopefully I can convince some friends to move over.

Make sure to keep doublechecking if your posts are actually gone. A bunch of people are noting that they edited their posts to delete their data but now the posts are back. Reddit seems to be rolling back the content their losing.

RIF was my daily driver for years! I was so sad when this all went down. But it’s for the best, lemmy, Mastodon, and peertube is really cool to investigate and explore.

The blackout hasn’t affected their bottom line for two reasons: checks have already been cashed and because there’s been a boost in clicks because of the news sites talking about Reddit.

The long term costs are yet unrealized.

Funny he talks about conversations. I was on /r/noahgetthe<fill in the blank>, a certain German political party from the 1930/40’s came up. I said I’d go Book Dexter on a specific mustached German leader (not randos that I said were him) from that time because of what he did to my family. I got a sitewide week ban. Conversations my foot.
