All he is supposed to be able to do is gavel the House in, oversee a new speaker election, and gavel the house out. He has no authority to do sanything else, like put legislation on the table.

Turns out he can try and be a petty asshole by kicking people out of their office’s, but doesn’t even have the power to do that, even though he tried his best!

Well, since Democrats and Republicans overwhelming support Israel, I can’t see this will be much of a problem in the long-term.

They could agree on a temporary permanent speaker… Someone who had the official role, but could be ousted as easily as McCarthy.

There are workarounds when both parties are on the same side of an issue.

So to republicans, perfect. Typically they want Congress to be paralyzed when they don’t have full power.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The global crisis unfolding in Israel is putting renewed scrutiny on Congress, which has been without a permanent House speaker since Kevin McCarthy was ousted last week.

Hamas on Saturday launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, leaving hundreds dead and escalating a decades-long conflict in the region.

Two scholars with knowledge told NBC News the House would need to elect McHenry as Speaker Pro Tem for this to change.

There is even a question as to whether McHenry could call for a moment of silence on the House floor — that is how limited his powers are believed to be.

We’ve seen statements from relevant House and Senate lawmakers expressing willingness to propose legislation to this effect.

It’s actually something we were discussing today, because there probably is a role for Congress here and without a Speaker of the House, that is a unique situation we’re going to have to work through,” the official said.
