I’m going to use this post answer some frequently asked questions about the transition from LemmyNSFW to FediNSFW and why it happened.
-
What happened, why the move?
-
Do I have to make a new account on FediNSFW?
- Yes.
-
Can I still post on LemmyNSFW?
-
Please don’t, that will make storage costs and data usage go up, eventually I plan to modify the site’s code to fully prevent post creation.
-
Please use FediNSFW instead.

How are you going to ensure the exact same thing won’t happen to FediNSFW?
- I already have other admin candidates I working with/onboarding.
- I plan to set up the accounts related to the site to be accessible by other admins via a unified admin email address, or via group access.
- I’m going to create a bitwarden vault with relevant credentials in it for all admins. That way if something happens and I disappear other admins can just login and take over.
- As far as cost goes, FOR NOW I can fully afford the cost of the server without donations, as far as I can tell at least.
- Currently the donations are just set to go into my personal account, but I would love to get to the point where we can set something up like or maybe joining the fedihosting foundation and have a pool of donations accessible without me. Not sure how I’m going to do that yet, so if you have suggestions, please let me know.

What apps can I use to connect to piefed/FediNSFW?
-
How can I donate to the instance?

There’s one small bug I’ve encountered:
If you submit an image post and later edit that post, it’s treated as URL post and then the image is not expanded (or expandable, depending on your settings) in the “list view” of the feed.
This problem doesn’t occur in the “collage view” of the feed.
This is hella encouraging. Thank you for picking up the torch and good luck.
Just a note of thanks: thanks.
eventually I plan to modify the site’s code to fully prevent post creation
Can you set them all to mod post only?
they already are, but mods are also sometimes still posting lol
I’m a mod. I can’t post last time I checked. Hmm… You can’t disable everything globally there man ?
You can’t globally disable posting, no. At least not without touching code, which I haven’t had time to do.
You mean globally ? All communities ? Why ?
on lemmynsfw not fedinsfw
Thanks for your work LP!
My 2c:
- I wonder if keeping LemmyNSFW up might actually be adding too much of a burden at this point — it seems like it could be driving confusion, inviting scraping requests, and splitting attention from this site
- Small thing, but NSFW content being visible when signed out might be quietly discouraging some people from registering
- A little more detail on the admin team would go a long way toward easing my mind
Do we need to make our favorite communities again?
Can a list of all communities be generated, so we can check and contribute?
If you were a mod of a community on lemmynsfw, you can import a backup from lemmynsfw into fedinsfw, then if you go to the @lemmynsfw community, in the sidebar there is an option you can choose in order to transfer the community here with all existing posts. I have to approve it and then you’ll have that community here!
If you weren’t a mod or you were but you don’t care to transfer the posts, if a community existed there and doesn’t exist here, you can just create a community you want.
If you weren’t a mod of a community, and you see that a community you want to create doesn’t exist here but did on lemmynsfw, and you want to transfer it and become mod, message me, I think I have the ability to transfer any community.
I don’t see where there is an option in the sidebar to transfer posts on either site. Not sure if I want to do that without seeing how it works with new stuff, but just an FYI
Sorry where do I create a backup?
@show_me_what_you_got_grrl@fedinsfw.app @BigMcLargeHuge@fedinsfw.app
Import a backup of your profile from lemmynstw into fedinsfw. On fedinsfw, navigate to the @lemmynsfw community, and go to the sidebar, below the moderators. If you were a mod of that community, you will see the option “Move community to fedinsfw.app”

I think i get it, not sure if I’m brave enough to do that, but I appreciate the detail
I don’t think bulk creating communities is a good thing. A heap of empty communities is like a ghost town. Ideally there should be a post to a community immediately when it is created, setting the tone and making it live.
Who said anything about bulk creating communities?
