As in, AGB’s hands-off moderation, “use the upvote and downvote system to curate content, don’t bother the mods” principle. I don’t like the extreme censorship in the main LGBT subreddits but AGB became extremely low quality when banned sub refugees arrived and the mods continued to use this approach. I’m assuming the admin here is going to promote this instance and make this community active at some point.

I do hope so. I appreciated the freedom that sub had.

I did also, it actually resulted in some good debates. And also a fair few crap posts, but those got swallowed up fairly quickly

Dumb question but why do you ask? I personally don’t trust lemmy at all in regards to posting what you want without being banned

Lemmy isn’t a social media company like Reddit where the company sets the rules for all communities that use Reddit’s website. It’s a network of websites run by people with no association to each other or to Lemmy’s developers, but there is technology that allows the different websites to communicate with each other. Each website can set its own rules. The website your account is on has very strict rules but other Lemmy websites can be much more relaxed.

For example, your account’s website is beehaw.org and mine is feddit.dk, but we’re commenting on a thread on lemmy.cock.social. The three websites can talk to each other (like email) but they all have different rules.

I do have the intentions to keep it hands-off and self-moderating for the most part. I believe that being able to ask the right (and wrong) questions for the LGBTQ+ and its allies is very important in the learning process. That being said, I would like to remain federated with other instances where any clear hate speech, or individuals who are solely here to insult others, may be met with a comment removal or a ban from the community.

I am testing the waters here. I’m aware that some instances have very strict rules, including a total ban on pornography.

Fair enough. I would say the main problem caused by AGB’s hands-off moderation isn’t offensive questions but rather the repetitive searchable questions, fake stories and shit-stirring threads like “should I be forced to date someone I don’t like”, which cause a lot of fighting but don’t contribute to any meaningful discussion. But I think it can be solved with a “frequently asked questions, don’t create a new thread about this” rule, even though that wouldn’t be completely self-moderating.

Lemmy as a social network is quite a small community. I expect most of the current users to be quite proficient at using a link aggregator such as Lemmy. Unless all you can see is the exact same questions over and over, I’d stick with downvoting.

Now that you mention it, the most cancerous posters on r/AGB almost always have post histories on porn subs only, so by not having porn on the instance, these users will exclude themselves. Problem solved!

Though I wonder how many other gay and bi men will choose to migrate to Lemmy. I rarely see gay guys who are interested in tech and privacy so the odds are that they will just keep using Reddit no matter how bad it gets. So it’s likely that this community won’t become active enough to attract trolls and spammers.

I think it really depends on the generation; the older generation in general isn’t very tech-savvy. But I know quite a lot of tech-savvy gay and bi young adults.

Yes but here’s my issue. I don’t like the other fediverse apps I don’t like the fediverse in general. Why? Because it’s set up like Twitter and I don’t like Twitter I like Reddit. I like the layout with the upvote and downvote feature and the post shows first while the comments follow. You can only use the Lemmy app with Lemmy instances this is what I mean I can’t use Mastodon on a Lemmy app it won’t work

I think you’re misunderstanding what the fediverse is. The “fediverse” refers to the technology that allows the different instances to communicate. It doesn’t specifically refer to Twitter clones or Reddit clones, since there are Facebook, Youtube and Instagram clones on the fediverse as well. You can actually use the Lemmy website to view Mastodon posts and vice versa. People have posted to Lemmy from Mastodon accounts and you can paste a Lemmy comment’s URL into Mastodon to view and reply to it like a tweet. The technology behind Mastodon, Lemmy and the other clones is the same, they can all communicate with each other.
