People love ignoring the fact that if you don’t take care of yourself, you’re going to feel like shit. Upwards of 80% of the chronic disease we see in the US is a direct result of poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. No one wants to hear it though

Germany did a huge study of a prescription anti-depressant versus St. John’s wort, versus placebo, driven by German hippies who were promoting St. John’s wort. Placebo won, and St. John’s wort actually had people more depressed. Many FDA-approved anti-depressants have been proven to do nothing in subsequent trials.

The medicine treats the symptoms and may be a useful tool for getting better but people really need to address the roots of their issues as well if they want to improve long term. It is tough to swallow sometimes and having friends and family to give you a push helps a lot. I’ve argued with friends for hours that they are capable of joining me on a hike. If i eventually win and they come, they tend to be very happy afterwards and say the effort was worth it and appreciate the push.
I have some unemployed friends who claim just 1 more medication switch and I’ll be ready to face life again. Then they switch, do nothing but play video games while letting their parents do all the chores etc and they wonder why they feel like shit still. I tell them to try to tough it out through some part time to at least make some progress and they resist and resist to no end. They claim they have to get better to participate in society again and i think thats very difficult to do without a purpose beyond minecraft and netflix.

The problem with depression in particular is that even if you know that things like exercise would help, it is really hard to push yourself to do them. You end up lying in bed feeling miserable and although there is nothing physically stopping you from just getting up and doing stuff, it feels like you are being held down and prevented from doing so and it takes an incredible amount of energy to overcome that.
There are also other reasons people don’t take care of themselves, that aren’t their fault. So many people these days are overworked and struggling to make ends meet while also juggling other responsibilities like child care and house work. It’s totally understandable not to have the energy for exercise and cooking healthy food at the end of the day. In my opinion it’s often a failure of the system and less of the individual.
That being said, exercise and taking care of your body absolutely does wonders for mental and physical health.
