    Hi! New to this all. From Reddit. I mod a few communities on reddit, nothing big but they are tech related. I know a lot of people on both would want to come over, since everybody is pretty upset with reddit rn.

    I just have a few questions maybe somebody could help me with;

    Where are instances hosted? Can I host an instance myself?

    Our accounts, I heard something about them being cross-platform with some other related websites to this, where are they hosted?

    Mastadon’s code of conduct says ‘Protect our community from harassment, malicious or illegal content’, what qualifies as illegal? Something that is illegal in China can be legal in other countries, and vice versa.

    I only ask because I see a lot of gray in the rules, which I get is needed, but in the end why have rules if it is all up to the judgement of the particular administrator reviewing the case.

      Yes. Just get a VPS and run the software. I haven’t done it yet, so I can’t help with the setup, but I’m pretty sure there are plenty of documentation out there.

      On the instance you signed up for. an account being cross-platform means a post made on a Lemmy instance will show up on a Kbin, Mastodon or PeerTube (the “Fediverse”) instance with the format “@[email protected]

      Assume the legal framework of the country where the instance you use to post is hosted. For example, if the server running it is physically in Germany, the laws governing what you post will be those of Germany/EU
