Honestly have no idea. If someone said “beatdown” I’d impulsively think of what I call “tough guy” hardcore, i.e. E-town Concrete, Madball, etc. Pretty sure those guys were just idiots, not fascists.

When I first saw Hardcore, I didn’t realize what community I was in and thought they were talking about Hardcore dance music and had never heard of this beatdown genre that cops are listening to.

“Never trust a hardcore kid that doesn’t listen to punk.” - Roger Miret

A bunch of the early bands were punk, had some heavily political stuff, and at least used to have a political attitude. I guess what became known as the “hardcore scene” has grown to distance itself from punk. I remember when I watched Boston Beatdown Vol. 2 and what a bunch of idiots, a bunch of sexually frustrated guys macho-posing to each other, and that’s what the “tough guy” look of the NYHC scene and such nurtured. And I guess that’s why Miret always says that sentence.

Musically, I don’t like those bands that are super slow, with breakdowns and shit, and lyrically I cringe at the ones where all they have to say is that they love their family and that the streets are tough. I know shit about the current machocore scene, newest songs and bands I know are probably 20 years old already, but I genuinely like a lot of songs from Agnostic Front, Sick of It All, Blood for Blood, and others - would I wear a T-shirt or even just buy their merch? Nah (Although yeah, I had CDs from all of those in the past, and one of the first “big” gigs I went to was Hatebreed + Agnostic Front).
