Not this week, but my fridge broke down not too long ago. If any of the other major appliances break down, it’s not a big deal. A fridge breaking down is a catastrophe. The only good thing is that it made it until after we were back from a trip and were able to deal with it. Would have been worse if we came back to a rotting fridge.

Oh, we went through something similar a few months ago. We were without power for 5 days due to a storm. We kept the fridge and freezer closed and, fortunately, despite the long blackout, we didn’t have to throw much away. But many people around us weren’t as lucky, and had to throw away hundreds of dollars’ worth of food…

We partly relied on non-perishable shelf food, such as canned vegetables and pasta, that we cooked on a BBQ. Our city converted one of its buildings into a crisis center where residents could take hot showers, get hot meals, and even sleep if the temperature dropped too much, especially since it was over Easter weekend. Fortunately, the temperature stayed around 10°C.

The entire area was blacked out, leaving over a million people without electricity. We also lacked internet access on our phones, except during the night due to the overload on a limited number of antennas. It was an odd few days, but the kids thoroughly enjoyed it.
