Odd that language around surimi/imitation crab meat tends to be completely unregulated and misleading.
Almost like this is less about informing the costumer, and more about something else…
Surimi has to be either called Surimi, something along the line of fish muscle protein or something like Surimi Crab Imitation, so including imitation or similar terms in the name of the product.
But I am fully with you that it is a horrible practise that processed fish does not have to be labelled the same way as unprocessed one. Catch method, location and so forth are important to consumers after all.
As well as with things like fish sticks, chicken nuggets, sausages, etc etc. Nobody cares about what they are really putting in their mouths. They are just anti vegan.
Ah yes the vegan conspiracy to prevent you from murdering crabs in cold blood.
What I’m insinuating here is that there is a weird bias/over regulations in labeling vegan products, that is not applied to other products.
Eg - why do businesses get to sell “crab meat” which is not crab but other fishes, and this is not considered misleading? Or “fruit snacks” in the US that are candy and contain no fruit.
But ag wants to control terms like “milk” and not allow things like “oat milk” to be called oat milk. There’s been pushes to not allow presenting beef alternatives as beef alternatives.
I’ve seen it argued that “fake meat” is inherently misleading, while if I buy “grapefruit juice” at the store it is likely to be more apple or pear, and there is not really a push to regulate there.
