So we have A (aussie.zone) H (hackertalks.com) S (slrpnk.net) and D (dubvee.org)
- UserS is banned from dubvee.org but not the community
- UserS respond to a post from H, and H and A see this comment
- D does not see UserS’s comment (makes sense, since they were banned).
- S has no community subscribers
- S does not see H, or A’s response to UserS’s comment
- 2 - Why does A see UserS’s comment at all?
- 3 - Why doesn’t S see A’s response, or H’s response to the comment? No local subscribers?

however on dubvee…

neither of our posts made it back to S.
And on slrpnk.net neither of our comments made it… https://slrpnk.net/post/23201137
I think because UserS was banned from dubvee.org https://lemmy.dubvee.org/modlog?page=1&actionType=All&userId=6263415
unrelated, but the UserS post appears to be LLM generated, which makes this whole exchange even more exceptional.
the style of writing rapidly changes from their preamble vs listicle… at the links resolve to real articles at least. However the 15ish papers they link to is a bit much. It takes me 2 hours to read and analyze the average paper - so this makes the probabily of just being a machine generated concern post even higher (doesn’t matter for this post)
I’ve made a new community rule for this exact scenario going forward
6 - No LLM generated posts . Don’t represent machine output as your own, and don’t use machines to burn human response time.
I’m also curious as to how an instance banned person was able to comment on a post to a community in that instance? Could they have done so innocently?
I also can’t see any of the comments from lemm.ee. I presume dubvee isn’t federating any of this out as the user is banned
instance banned person was able to comment on a post to a community in that instance?
Oh yeah, this is expected behavior. A bans U on instance B without a community ban. U can still post and vote on their instance B, but none of that content will federate to A.
However, other instances C D E wont see any of U’s content, because A isn’t forwarding it… unless U is responding to content from a user on a different instance, then B will federate the content to the content creators instance (which doesn’t drop it) and A which will drop it.
Basically, what this means is things get kinda weird when a user is only instance banned but not community banned.
Should I ban them now to stop them wasting their and our time further to no useful effect at all? I think I shall since they couldn’t have seen my warning anyway
I’d wait at least 24h so people can look at the state of things and maybe provide some understanding on why UserS’s post federated to A at all. That still surprises me.
