Global motorcycle gear experts Dainese are finally solving the problem of what to do with your old motorcycle helmet once it’s reached its end of life. Sort of.
When I had to dispose of my old motorcycle helmets, I gave them to the fire department (Paramedic squads). I was told (citation needed) there’s a special cutter they use to cut a helmet off a crash victim (because they don’t want to try and yank off the helmet and cause worse spinal injuries. Since the cutter destroys the helmet, they don’t often get a chance to practice. I figure I want my fire department quite comfortable with the helmet cutter when its time to do it for real. See if your fire department has the helmet cutter and if they want some practice before you drop them off though.

The program is called Life Impacto. It’s a new program that’s funded in part by the European Union.
The only thing is, the helmets eligible for the Life Impacto recycling scheme can only have thermoplastic shells. No carbon fiber or other materials at this time, unfortunately.
