Authorities discovered the abuse after a welfare check revealed children locked in a shed without water or sanitation.
The couple, charged with human trafficking, child neglect, and forced labor, targeted the children because of their race.
The court ordered them to pay $280,000 in restitution each.
How does restitution work when they will both die in prison?
Assets are seized and sold off I would expect. If they own their house, depending on land value that could cover it for all five.
At that price tag it’s like slavery is legal if you can afford it.
Slavery is still legal literally in the use of prison labor. It’s also arguably legal in the sense that it’s not called slavery to keep people trapped in poverty, so folks voluntarily work for next to nothing and still can’t stay afloat
