‘The #pens are giving up a late-round draft pick to take Conor Timmins and Connor Dewar from Toronto. The #leafs needed to clear salary.’ - Chris Johnston

Leafs to get a pick back from Pens

Chris Johnston has the return the Toronto Maple Leafs will receive from the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Connors Dewar and Timmins.

The Leafs will get a late-round pick. The Leafs needed to dump salary to add Brandon Carlo and Scott Laughton.

    Winner: Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs didn’t have the splashiest deadline — at one point in the day, while chaos swirled, you wanted to poke Brad Treliving with a stick and see if he was still awake. But Scott Laughton and Brandon Carlo are sneaky good gets who make Toronto a better defensive team, first and foremost.

Laughton’s certainly an upgrade over Max Domi, who can shift to the wing. With the Flyers retaining half of Laughton’s salary, the Leafs get a reliable two-way, third-line center for two playoff runs at just a $1.5 million cap hit. And it didn’t cost them any of their top prospects or young players. Even the 2027 first-rounder is top-10 protected.

Laughton is good on the ice and great in the room. It’s not the most exciting move, but for a team that’s been done in by its lack of forward depth in previous postseasons, it’s a savvy one.

‘Maple Leafs acquire defenceman Brandon Carlo from Bruins’

A big blueliner is on the move.

The Boston Bruins have traded defenceman Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Friday ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline.

Carlo, a staple on the Bruins’ back end for nearly a decade has one goal, eight assists and 24 penalty minutes in 63 games on the season.

But with Boston falling out of the playoff race, it decided to move on from the nine-year veteran. Now, the six-foot-five, 220-pound defenceman joins an Atlantic Division rival to help with their playoff push.

Laughton made an appearance on TSN’s Tradecentre shortly after the initial reports were shared that he was heading to the Maple Leafs and he expressed his enthusiasm about the opportunity of playing with his hometown team.

“It’s pretty surreal. I think I found out 10 minutes ago, so just kind of letting it all sink and kind of figuring out my way here,” he said. “But, I’m excited for a chance at the playoffs. It’s been a while here in Philly but I’m extremely grateful to the Flyers and I’m excited for the opportunity.”

‘The #leafs send a first-round pick and Nikita Grebenkin to Philadelphia for Scott Laughton (50% retention), a fourth-round pick and sixth-round pick.’ - Chris Johnson via Twitter

‘‘Sorry the Leafs’ first round pick going to Philadelphia is 2027, not 2026. And again, it’s top-10 protected’ - Pierre LeBrun
