On the Patreon: OnePlus 13 Camera Conclusion: Treading Water in a Sea of Downgrades…

All phone brands this year are trying to cut component costs to keep prices in check. It’s a victory when we can say “at least this doesn’t feel like a downgrade when using it”.
Still, for the similarity in camera experience year over year, there is ONE SMALL gripe I have with the new cameras on the OnePlus 13…

And of course, I had to poke a little fun at my pals over on GSMArena for this little nugget about sensor size differences. Techies often dont know as much about photography as they think they do 😅

![A screen shot of an article about photography replying to another screenshot of a different blog tlkaing about camera sensor sizes.

Article: The sensors have changed, where the OP12 used a 1/2" sensor, the 13 uses a 1/1.95” type. That means the OP13 has the larger sensors, but it’s a physical change so small, there’s no discernible impact on photo IQ. The pixel size increases slightly as we pack fewer dots on a larger slab, but again, in a way that is likely indistinguishable from the OP12.

As a quick tangent, how little techies understand photography, the folks at GSMArena say this about the telephoto sensor on the OP13. I worry that the folks at GSMArena have forgotten how fractions work…

Screenshot: The OnePlus 13’s camera setup will once again be co-developed with Hasselblad. The 3x telephoto solution will have a 33% smaller sensor than the predecessor, as it will be 1/1.95" big. The camera will have an f/2.6 aperture in front and be a circle rather than a rectangle, allowing for better light capture.](https://files.techhub.social/media_attachments/files/114/065/298/678/464/652/original/82173c65a87e509b.png)

Fair question for anyone reading this in case I missed it, but has any phone been launched in 2025 where every piece of the camera experience was a practical upgrade? I really can’t think of one off the top of my head…

@[email protected] Depends on your definition of “practical upgrade”. For my workflow the new microphones and video optimization in the iPhone 16 Pro were a big enough update with practical benefits that I upgrade (coming from an iPhone 13, to be fair).
