ETA: thanks everyone who replied. I’ve actually seen the movie, but it was a bit meh for me. Not bad in any way, just didn’t hit right. I remember I enjoyed much more the first d&d movie (then one from 2000). But hey, to each their own! 🙂
Generally well liked by audiences, D&D nerds and film buffs. I watched it and enjoyed it. Some highlights:
Good storyline with consistent characters and a well paced plot. Good acting and notable names in the cast with some newer talent too.
Creators clearly loved their source material. Lots of world building detail if you’re into that. Good mix of both practical effects and special effects. The Paladin’s intro and the Jarnathan scene are good examples of practical effects side, and the dragon and spell casting are good examples of SFX.
From the D&D side, you get the feel of “just a bunch of friends getting together for a tabletop adventure.” They ham up the comedy a bit. The Paladin is like a player or DMPC that joins for one session and then peaces out. Apparently even the events of the combat sequences go in initiative order.

I do feel like (atleast in my groups) the whole acting goofy and having fun rather than playing it seriously came with age. When I was younger it was more about looking up rules every single time, but as an adult there is just not enough time to do that and enjoy a good evening of fun.

I was really sceptical before watching the movie, but it really just feels like a group of friends telling you about their last campaign.

Something that’s not captured when D&D appears in most tv shows like Stranger Things, where it feels more like Heroquest.
Then again, probably kids playing would be less silly and more serious?
