It’s not overthinking to question the usefulness of blatant disregard for functional systems. You’re throwing away something that works perfectly well, and you haven’t given a single convincing reason for it. That’s not me overthinking, that’s you failing to explain the violation.

It’s a Japanese artform, they can present it however they fucking please. They have been writing their language from right to left for thousands of years. Seems like a pretty functional system to me. But I’m sure you know better.

But think, for a second, what it would take to reverse the order. You would have to move the bubbles completely and make them a different shape (horizontal rather than vertical). That would be a nightmare to “translate” (using quotes because it would be far more than just translation). You would need to redraw nearly everything. You can’t just flip everything horizontally, because the bubbles are still the wrong shape and any writing in the background will be visibly reversed.

If you flipped all the images in manga. All right handed characters are suddenly left handed and vice versa. Everyone is driving on the opposite side of the road. East becomes west and west is east. Anything that is spelled out that isn’t in text bubbles is now a mirror image (like a sign hanging over a shop). Most translated manga books and e readers will explain this if they don’t flip the images.
