As I was looking at a local municipality’s “Community Strategic Plan”, they listed some “Top Achievements” for the previous year.
Among them was “Increased bike lanes by 1.01km in 2023.”
I mean, seriously? A whole kilometre that was split between two different projects?! /s
Anyone else feel like their municipality is simply doing the bare minimum for cyclists so they can pat themselves on the back?
My city recently put in a bunch of bike lanes and protected most of them with concrete barriers that are held in place by rebar. Even with these additions, I can only safely access maybe 1/8th of the city (excluding neighbourhoods). There’s even a shopping mall that is right beside a bike lane but most of the stores can only be accessed by navigating a massive parking lot.
They’re putting in another north-south bike lane, but that one will be complete in …30 years as per their website.
The biggest accomplishment of my city is turning an old coal train track into a bike path. Then after that was finished they put in a new interchange for the main highway lol.
*Also none of the post offices are accessible by bike.
This is the bane of my existence. Canada Post seems to think that putting their post office in stores that have poor accessibility is a good idea.
In response, I make sure to take my fully loaded mountain bike (looks like a touring bike) into the store whenever I have to drop anything off.
And yes, I’ve written many times, and have spoken to staff at various locations… nobody seems to give a shit, so I’ll continue bringing my bike inside. I hate doing it, but I’m not leaving my bike outside the store without as much as a pole to lock it to.
