Most of these “non” events were started by, and still include a large religious aspect.

IMO, new years is the only “holiday” that exists because number on the calendar changes… A number on the calendar changes every day, so why we choose to throw a party and celebrate this changing of numbers is basically nonsense.

That’s what I like about new years. It’s there for no good reason. There’s nothing special about January 1st that’s more special than any other date. The only mildly interesting thing that happens is that all three numbers that represent the date on our current calendar system, change at the same time. We go from 23:59:59 on 2024-12-31 to 00:00:00 on 2025-01-01. It’s as unique as any other day of the year. … Y’know, April 10th only comes once per year! Just like every other day of the year… With one notable exception. February 29th.

It’s not special, it’s not mired in religious events and folklore. It’s literally the point in time that we, as a species, decided, yep, this is when the calendar starts. Let’s do 12 months, each with 28-31 days, and we’ll count how many times we do that, and call those years. Cool 👍

It’s global, ubiquitous, and everyone knows about it and most celebrate it in some way, shape, or form. Most people get January 1st off work, and nothing else changes between December 31 and January 2nd.

It’s senseless fun. I love that.
