City officials are proposing stricter enforcement, higher fines and new technology in part to prevent rent-controlled apartments from being listed on Airbnb and Booking.com, the subject of a Capital & Main and ProPublica investigation.
It’s the city and the hotel owners. They want to block people from using vacation rentals so they have to go to hotels.
Yeah, how dare they try to enforce zoning laws and reduce the number of housing locations that are bought up by wealthy interests to be rented out as vacation rentals rather than housing a local family!

NYC made this change recently. It’s necessary. Housing is awful in major cities and AirBnB and Vrbo have just made it worse, completely ignoring zoning laws and turning housing into apartment-sized hotel rooms.
