Prison should be about removing the threat from society. Penitentiary comes from the words penance. Which means to acknowledge your wrong and absolve it. Paraphrasing there.
People should be given the opportunity to improve while in prison to avoid what sent them there.
Just sending them to prison creates a cycle that is hard to break. It’s in the best interest of society to break that cycle.
