He was only appointed the vice-president because republican leadership was afraid Trump would be alienating to elderly rich evangelicals who own things like all the aluminum in the state of Nebraska. Trump’s vice president instead of Pence could have been a cardboard cutout with a sign reading, “Don’t worry, Trump’s annoying but he’ll be a normal republican”
