lol.
Really though they did explain it. At one point they were open with it and it resulted in witches and wizards being rounded up and murdered. So most just advocated for going underground with magic while a violent subset advocated for using magic to gain total power over muggles.
Except that any witch or wizard of any training could mow down scores of muggles. This is prior to the invention of guns, but any gun pre-civil war era wouldn’t be an issue either.
I think there are more advanced spells/enchantments that can protect against modern firearms.
So really it’s about keeping power to themselves, and always has been.
Sure but the vast majority of witches and wizards aren’t violent by nature, just like most people. They don’t want to rule or anything they just want to go about their lives in their own way with as little drama as possible.
And they’re not like a completely separate species of people either, because you can have magical ability come up spontaneously in muggle families, like Harry’s mother. So a very large amount of of witches and wizards have muggles in their families and don’t want to have a war between wizards and muggles.
I mean, given western’s society’s disdain for magic and long history of witch-burnings, why the fuck would I go out of my way to tell people I can use magic?
Just like in reality, in the Harry Potter world people feared magic. I don’t think it was explicitly said, but the magical community is much smaller than the muggle one. Witches and wizards are just afraid of being murdered.
Anyone here also read HPMOR?
I read about half of it. I thought it had some interesting ideas, but I found the protagonist way too much of a Mary Sue for my taste.
Harry Potter is already a gigantic Mary Sue, that’s like half the point of HPMOR.
