I think the lack of a sorting algorithm in mastodon will make it hard for something like the BBC to gain a lot of followers. They put out so many posts that it will dominate any feed and overshadow friends that post once a day or so.

I think its going to help that they have different accounts on their instance for different purposes. While there will be fewer people discovering those BBC accounts, at least at first, someone can feel that their decision to follow a specific journalist or topic of coverage was well founded when it doesn’t dominate their feed, but does keep them updated about stuff.
It has plenty of sorting algorithms. It doesn’t have suggestion algorithms and that’s a good thing.
What do you mean? Can you sort your mastodon feed in any way other than the equivalent of “new” in lemmy?
What I meant was that twitter had an algorithm to promote post / users that it felt would get you more engaged. That’s what the blue checkmark has become now. A way of paying to get your posts promoted.
The lack of that algorithm means you need to go look for content rather than having it spoon fed to you.
Suggestion algorithms make the social media world go ‘round.
