Some people just have other priorities. As soon as you start moral grandstanding like this you better check your squeaky clean because I bet there’s something like this that can be said about you.

Speak for yourself. I have my own chip fab in my basement and I make my own smartphones and PC boards. I get all of the glass and silicon I need from local beach sand.

If you want one of my phones, graphics cards, or mother boards, visit my stall at the farmers market. I also pack my electronics in sustainable mason jars. If you return the jars I will give you a discount on my handmade hemp USB cables.

Hey, if we don’t let people in glass houses throw stones, then we’ll still end up with too many glass houses.

    trust vs necessary.

I don’t trust them but they are a necessary evil for some tasks. like messaging apps, what use is Signal or other secure/foss messaging app if the people you need to communicate with uses meta products. so it is necessary for me to use meta products in order to facilitate communication with some group of people.

Operating system our company only uses windows and provide a laptop with windows as an OS. now why would I go to trouble myself in reformatting this laptop to unstall other OS when it isn’t even mine and would get me into trouble, not to mention break compatibility with my worke ecosystem. so, i use windows.

so yeah, it applies to others as well

It’s silly watching people like you who just scream over “big tech” blow any chance of normies listening to you. You do more damage then good.

I mean I would because I’m definitely not afraid of anyone posting on Lemmy lol, but that’s rather beside the point since this isn’t how data collection works

I support the improvements in advertising, UX, and design innovation that data collection yields, and I reject utterly that it is an “invasion of privacy” with the same enthusiasm as I reject “keeping your money in banks is for suckers” and “the government tracks you through your phone”

Fears of data collection are conspiracy-driven and not grounded in reality. No one is upset about Nielsen “harvesting” TV data, as an obvious example.

I support the improvements in advertising

              Minipulation sucks

UX, and design innovation that data collection yields

Companies can make a better product or use it to better make dark patterns

and I reject utterly that it is an “invasion of privacy”

              • “Jane doe and 5 others clicked the button scedule marrage counciling she moved her mouse in a tistinct way, unique to her, she also today went to e21”

              Vs

              • “6 people clicked the button scedule marrage counciling from the home page compared to 0 on the scedule marrage counciling page”

with the same enthusiasm as I reject “keeping your money in banks is for suckers”

Dont call your critics crazy, threat modeling keeps you sane

and “the government tracks you through your phone”

Are you a direct target? If not, automated tracking can be defeated by automated tools.

Dragnet surveillance witch gets better every year with AI. But can be defeated

If you are an active threat to the us like MLK (wikipedia, NPR)

Malware brokers and Espionage are employed

              Edit: complete rewrite

Nielsen never actually knew what you were watching though. They had to take your word for it. The comparison would be if Nielsen had trackers on your eyes and cameras and microphones in your house. I do agree most concerns about data collection are overblown, but that doesn’t mean opening yourself up to any and all data collection is wise. And to act like there’s never an issue of companies taking your data for ill is laughably naïve IMO. If nothing else, unnecessarily sharing personal data exposes you as a larger target for things like identify theft.

I’m a security professional too and you’re just yelling against an idealogy. These people want to be angry at big tech, they don’t understand the privacy concerns at all. Most of them still talk about Alexa spying on you.

For those people, the “free” services they’re using aren’t “bad enough” for them to bother leaving. Couple that with the majority of people they care about also staying, and that’s the result.

Small tech can be much nastier as they have less scrutiny on them. Think of all these companies writing spyware for governments/corporations around the world.

Dude in yellow shorts pissing over the fence has some serious pressure! I’m good for maybe 1.5-2ft vertical… Is this even possible or is it likely a water hose or something?

Being serious, it was just a hose. I’ve seen several people do that, where they blast a hose from their crotch and are like “Look at me, I’m the most powerful pisser of all time!”

I don’t trust them. I use them and throw them. I know it can go down anytime or it can change it’s rules and regulations anytime. Enjoy until then and if it fucks like reddit, move on and find new place. Sometimes when everyone around us is using big tech products for work or personal, we have to use it.
