Well, adding these extra fees is a surefire way to stop or slow people from ordering anything. Psychologically, someone would be more willing to pay for an item that’s $15 with free shipping, than one that’s $10 + $5 shipping.
I think they’ve generally started hiring people to only handle online orders, or that’s how it appears at my local stores.
To play devil’s advocate:
