Joseph Woll launched himself back into the conversation for top spot in the Maple Leafs crease on Sunday night.

Woll had his best game, by far, since he returned from nearly three months on the shelf with a high ankle sprain. He was beaten only twice on 43 shots, one of those shots a no-chancer off the left skate of Jake McCabe on a Carolina power play that ultimately won the Hurricanes the game.

Woll was the reason the Leafs had a chance to tie the game in the final minutes of regulation. He looked a lot like the goalie who was taking hold of the Leafs crease in November and December.

Woll will need a lot more of that to make this a race down the stretch and into Game 1 of the postseason.

Right now, the crease would seem to belong, tentatively, very tentatively, to Ilya Samsonov.
