Another community with the name [email protected] that I mod is online but it has a different address: https://sh.itjust.works/c/sino
To me that’s confusing to have the same name on the same instance. I realize that different instances have the same named communities, but it seems crazy that you can have the same one on the same instance. Has this been addressed before?
Edit: I should add that I’m not mad or anything about it, whatever you guys say goes. I forget how harsh it can sound in text. I do find it confusing, but in a “I had no idea” way.
There’s two parts to a community:
- display name - can be anything you want
- internal name - stays the same once you create it
So I could make ten communities with the same display name, but different internal names, and that’s fine according to Lemmy. I think it’s an interesting design design choice, but even if they require unique display names, people would still make copycat communities (e.g. “Politics vs Politics.”).
It’s disappointing that it’s so easy to confuse users, but that’s a consequence of the core design decisions Lemmy devs made.
I guess I have to watch more closely what the address names are, thanks for the explanation.
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected]
