It’s a shame Lemmy doesn’t support meta communities, c/United Kingdom would make sense as a meta community pulling in all the communities like uknews and casual uk

We probably should have one, but I’m in two minds.

On the one hand, I actually think we’re a bit too fractured already. Content is slow in some communities, and it puts pressure on a few users to keep those community going, and news generates a lot of content. What would go into c/UnitedKingsom after?

If the last post was weeks ago then it puts people off posting themselves, so consolidation would make them healthier.

i.e. United Kingdom, UKBusinessNews, the proposed UK News, could happily live as one community right now, same could be said for UKMemes, Casual Uk, British Problems/Success and AndFinally.

On the other hand, this sets up for the future we probably we want to end up with, and it will be really hard to split communities later down the line, i.e. would we put a rule in c/UnitedKingdom banning news posts and tell people to move to c/UKNews? I dont think it would go down well.

That’s my thinking - sketch out the structure now, get everyone in the habit of posting to the right places and everything should scale smoothly.

and it will be really hard to split communities later down the line, i.e. would we put a rule in c/UnitedKingdom banning news posts and tell people to move to c/UKNews? I dont think it would go down well.

I think they’ll live and we should have tools available to move posts to other communities, so a few noses will be out of joint for a bit but nothing deal breaking.

Looks like it, I just wasn’t sure if the United Kingdom one wanted to be kept for more general stiff about the UK which was a bit more serious than Casual UK and then a dedicated UK News community would be the automatic destination for news.

True. Reddit evolved organically, whereas a new start lets us put a bit of planning in.

          So you could have:

          News:

          • UK News - for serious news
          • And finally - less serious news

          Non-news:

          • United Kingdom - more serious discussion of British issues
          • Casual UK - for less serious discussion of it

Over in the other discussion I also suggested c/muckraking for tabloid journalism and gossip (which would give people the chance to block it and not have it trouble their timeline).
