Hi there! I’m going to be swapping to a Kbin instance from Lemmy since, while I enjoy Lemmy, I really prefer the fact that Kbin has their source code hosted on Codeberg and want to actively support that.

I also want to support keeping Kbin from being a centralized platform, and want to get set up on a smaller instance. I took a look at the Terms of Service and About pages of the site, and was wondering if it’s a general Kbin instance, and what the rules of the instance are.

Thanks in advance!

I’m sure @buzz will be able to provide you with more satisfying answers but here’s my poor attempt to help in the meantime.

    • I think registration is currently disabled so I’m not sure migrating here will be possible.
    • I not sure we have any instance specific rules - I mostly stick to common sense/the usual ones (don’t be an asshole, don’t post obviously illegal content etc). Buzz hasn’t kicked me out yet so I think that’s good enough.

As for the instance itself, I do believe it’s a general one.

I closed registrations due to some worries about the state of Kbin as a project. I thought it was better to close the door than to grow lots of users if there’s a concern it’s not going to work out! We do have server rules but the about pages have just been remodelled in Kbin and I’ll have to rewrite them all again.

Ah, so I’m not crazy after all. I thought I remembered reading the rules before signing up but checking the about page before replying to this thread made me question my memory.

The uncertainty about the instance and closing registration is understandable - I know I might sound like a broken record but have you checked mbin? Maybe that would help with current issues? I promise I won’t ask about it again as I don’t want to nag you about it, I just appreciate the instance and hope it succeeds (or at least survives).

Ah, seems I misread FediDB on the status of registrations. Thanks for the help though!

I know you mentioned kbin having a Codeberg hosted code as one of the reasons for supporting it but I’d also suggest checking out mbin instances. While the creators went with git for this one, it’s a fork that’s not dependent on one man which makes the development way faster and comes with quite a few improvements.

That’s just a side note though, hope you find a fitting instance!
