Why do racists always pretend everyone else is secretly like them?
In that one respect, they are accidentally right. Everyone has implicit racial biases whether they realize it or not.
To claim one is 100% not racist is basically akin to “I don’t even see color.” It is denial, often self-denial. This is just sociology.
The best way to minimize this reality is to be self-aware of one’s own biases and make conscious effort not to act on those biases.
It is more damaging to pretend you have no implicit racial bias whatsoever and therefore nothing you can do could possibly have racially based motivations. Proud racists use this line of thinkng to attack critical race theory, a valid sociological concept.
People are pattern matching machines. If you don’t find and work to remove racist patterns, your machine is broken. Clean your shit. It’s good for you.

A lot of people, especially racists, lack empathy. They probably can’t truly conceive of what it’s like to live in a brain that’s not racist; therefore, everyone must be racist.
I’ve seen good men do bad things, bad men do good things. Whether you’re gonna end up in heaven or hell, it’s not God’s plan, it’s your own. You just gotta remember what it was.

I didn’t have to do anything, I chose to. Doesn’t mean I agree with his views or think he’s any less a piece of shit for it. At least he has more sense of self awareness than racists who deny it because they have a black coworker or something.
By saying it, he’s telling people who like him that it’s okay. Especially kids, who want to be like their heroes. With great power comes great responsibility.

Wrestling fans on the regular play the “Well. Chris Benoit was an amazing wrestler and we should respect his work, even if we don’t respect the man” card that almost invariably turns into gushing stories about how much people used to love a violent bully who murdered his wife and child.
Most people never actually saw hogan wrestle (he had long since stopped giving a shit by the time his “prime” started) but that won’t stop people from wanting to talk about what an amazing guy he was because they watched a WWE dvd about it.
Any kid who likes wrestling knows who Hulk Hogan is. And people who still like him use his excuses to do or say bad things.
Well we should probably keep those kids from listening to his racist rants or watching his sex tape or watching his horrible reality tv show then. Wouldn’t want “the children” to learn he’s a piece of shit or something I guess?
