I’ve never listened to Baroness, but just looking at the album titles and covers, I like the chromatic idea of having each album be a different color. Should I listen in order of release date? Also, I read some opinions that the later albums have atrocious mixing. Is this true? Does it really take away from the music?

I started with Purple. Overall, that album is the least consistent but contains some of their best songs, I would recommend starting there. After that, I listened to Yellow and Green which is my favorite. The Grey and Gold came out, so I listened to that one next. I think the mixing is actually fine on that one; it fits the overall sound well. Red and Blue are more “sludgy” than the others, so more of an apples to oranges but are still solid records.

I would start in order. First & Second are still solid doom/sludge albums. Red is probably their best album (IMO), followed closely by Blue, however blue starts to show hints of them running out of ideas and branching into a more melodic and ‘formulaic’ approach. By the time Yellow/Green, and Purple come out, the sounds is very repetitive and uninspired (my 2 cents).

Loved the covers, could never get into the tempo. Was definitely a me issue tho.
